Aubeterre sur Dronne, Angouleme, Brantome, Bordeaux, St Emillion, Cognac, Blaye. These are just a few of the beautiful places you can visit within an hour of Le Fagnard.
Aubeterre Sur Dronne – A must for any visitor to this area. Voted one of the most beautiful villages in France. Angouleme – The capital of the Charente and known as the capital of the comic strip. Lots of beautiful buildings, shops, cafés and restaurants. Visit a museum or just take in the atmosphere of this lovely small city.
Brantome – Just over the border into the Dordogne you can visit the beautiful town of Brantome. Situated on the banks of the Dronne it is sometimes called the Venice of the Dordogne!. Visit the Benedictine Abbey built by Charlemagne in 769.
Riberac - En route to Brantome you will pass through Riberac. A pretty town with a bustling Friday Market.
Saint- Emilion – The beautiful medieval city of Saint-Émilion is a must visit while in this area. Discover the largest monolithic church in Europe. Take a long lunch in one of the many restaurants and wander the streets stopping at the many lovely shops and art galleries along the way. Wine tastings are available but may have to be booked in advance.
Bordeaux – No visit to this area would be complete without a trip to Bordeaux now a world heritage site. It has everything. Museums, parks, gardens, festivals, markets, top hotels and restaurants, beautiful architecture and great shopping. You can go for a day by train from Chalais but a longer visit would be advised as there is so much to see and do http://www.bordeaux.fr
Blaye – The Citadel at Blaye is also a must see and another Unesco World Heritage site. Designed and build in the 17th century as a true walled city to protect Bordeaux from sea invasions. It stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the Gironde Estuary (The largest estuary in Western Europe)
Cognac – A town of 2 distinct districts renowned worldwide for the Brandy it produces –the new town where you will find wide boulevards, shops and street cafes and the old town which is much quieter with its castle and historic monuments and where most of the famous distilleries can be found. Situated between Angouleme and Saintes and is an easy drive from Chalais.
If all of the above have not kept you busy enough while in our beautiful area then you can go further afield. We have a train station in Chalais where you can get direct trains to Angouleme, Bordeaux and Coutras with connections onwards.
